Read about Ms.M’s Intuitive Message

About this reading: "A Message from Ms.M" isn't based on any particular divination formula. It's this site's own corner, offering short words from the perspective of our fortune-telling supervisor, Ms.M. Enter your birth date, and one message is chosen from a set of 46.

The message isn't a daily one. It's fixed to your birth date, so the same date always brings up the same message. It isn't a test of how strong your intuition is, either. Think of it as a small, just-for-fun word meant for you.

Short, one-line message readings like this keep getting read, arguably because they skip any complicated theory or calculation and let you take the words in, right away, as exactly what you needed to hear. The same words can land completely differently depending on when you read them and what's on your mind. As we see it here, when a message feels like it "hit home," that's less the power of the words themselves and more your own mind, in that moment, finding the meaning in them.

Lore column: Where Did the "Bug" Behind a Premonition Live?

A short read on the legends and strange tales around this reading, with this site's own view.

You feel uneasy for no reason, then learn later that something happened. In Japanese this is called mushi no shirase, "word from the bug." Many other phrases blame the movements of the heart on bugs: "the bug in my belly won't settle" for lingering anger, "the bug is in a bad spot" for a sour mood, "the bug doesn't like him" for an instinctive dislike.

Behind them, it is said, lay an older medical idea that bugs living inside the body caused illness and emotion. The Harikikigaki, a medical text said to have been compiled in 1568 by a physician in Osaka during the Warring States period, depicts no fewer than 63 kinds of "belly bugs" dwelling in the organs, drawn with a good deal of humor. Such books were used by doctors into the Edo period, and even gloominess and fits of temper were explained as the work of bugs.

Intuition is the whisper of something small living inside us. People of the past pictured it in the shape of a bug.

In this site's view, the phrase mushi no shirase holds a kind of wisdom: it lets us receive an unexplainable hunch at a little distance from ourselves. This is speculation, but rather than carrying a bad feeling as a weakness of their own heart, people of old may have found it easier to say "the bug is stirring." When you read an intuitive message, it may help to watch whatever flutter it stirs in your chest from a small step away.
