About this reading: Angel numbers is a relatively recent spiritual idea, holding that numbers you keep noticing — on a clock, a license plate and so on — carry messages from angels. The usual account is that angel-themed spirituality became popular in the 1990s, books explaining the meanings of the numbers appeared in the mid-2000s, and the idea spread through social media from the 2010s onward (its origins are debated).
On this page, 254 commonly seen sequences — like 1111, 777, 1212 or 12:21 — each have their own meaning, with notes on love, work and money. Any other number is read by its repeated digit, or else reduced by adding its digits down to one and read by that, in a way that overlaps with numerology.

The first person to seriously try to name the experience of seeing the same numbers again and again was not an angel enthusiast but a psychologist. The Swiss psychiatrist Carl Gustav Jung recounted that, just as a woman patient was describing a dream in which she was given a golden scarab jewel, he noticed an insect tapping at his consulting-room window. When he caught it, it turned out to be a rose chafer, a gleaming gold-green beetle that is the closest local relative in appearance to the Egyptian scarab.
Jung called such events, which coincide meaningfully without any causal link, "synchronicity," and he wrote about it together with the physicist Wolfgang Pauli. Around the same era, the Austrian biologist Paul Kammerer is said to have recorded coincidences in which the same numbers turned up in succession on things like tickets and room numbers, and to have wondered whether such chains of chance were a natural force like gravity. Einstein is reported to have called the idea "original and by no means absurd."
As we see it here, belief in angel numbers and the window of Jung's consulting room lead to the same place. This is our own conjecture, but people cannot bear for long the thought that the world moves without meaning, and so we search coincidences for signals addressed to ourselves. When the digits on a clock line up and a chill runs down your spine, perhaps it is the same old feeling that wakes in every ghost story: that someone unseen is watching you.
