Psychology
Crocodiles lie still, then strike fast. Being chased by one mirrors a long-dormant problem suddenly becoming real—perhaps a deadline or a decision you kept postponing.
Folklore and history
In J. M. Barrie's Peter Pan, a crocodile that swallowed a clock relentlessly stalks Captain Hook. Its ticking approach is a famous image of inescapable time, a clue for reading this chase as being pursued by time.

This site's view
In this site's view, listen for sound. Audible steps or splashes mean you already know the threat; only a silent presence behind you suggests an unnamed anxiety following quietly.
Going deeper: our reading
Crocodiles move astonishingly fast when they lunge from the water's edge, yet they are said to be poor at running long distances on land. Their burst of speed is powerful, but it does not last. In this site's reading, a dream of being chased by a crocodile may show a heart shrinking from a sudden great threat while somewhere knowing this crisis will not last forever. The first shock can be fierce, but if you keep calm and keep your distance, its momentum fades. Fleeing inland away from the water suggests you are regaining composure by leaving the place where trouble began. Running into the water suggests panic has led you onto the opponent's own ground. This is our speculation, but if the crocodile vanished as you kept running, your persistence is already overtaking the threat.
