Being pushed around by gossip or copycats; escaping means relationship worries ease.

Psychology
Being chased by a monkey reflects being pushed around by people or tasks that keep crowding you when you want calm. Monkeys are quick and unpredictable, circling through trees, so they fit the feeling of being headed off wherever you run. On a mountain path it is someone at work; in town, rumors and eyes; at home, family teasing. Several monkeys suggest tiredness with group pressure.
Folklore and history
In rural Japan monkeys raid fields and sometimes chase people, a familiar nuisance. Yet since the word for monkey sounds like leave, monkey charms have been made across the country so evil or illness would depart. Dream lore links monkeys to cunning; being chased hints at being jerked around by others, and escaping means the trouble will clear.

This site's view
In this site's view, the dream has an ironic twist: the monkey, whose name means leave, is following you. A relationship you thought you let go, or a problem you thought closed, may be saying it is not over. If the monkey carried something, it is a matter you left behind. If it only made noise, the other side may simply enjoy your reaction.
Going deeper: our reading
Monkeys leap from tree to tree and can come at you from overhead as well as from the ground. In this site's reading, being chased by a monkey reflects pursuit not by strength but by a restless noise that closes in from every side: endless messages and notifications, small favours you cannot refuse, gossip with no pause. Each is minor, yet together they leave no escape. If the monkey came at you from the treetops, you may be worn down by detailed demands or watchful eyes from those above you. If it ran along the ground, rivalry with peers may be the weight. This is our speculation, but covering your ears as you ran suggests your heart wants quiet before solutions.
