▲ Leans unlucky (a warning) Traditionally a warning — read it as pointing to what to watch, not as doom
Fear of invaded privacy: dread of secrets exposed, or weariness at others' meddling.
Category: Places & buildings (how to read this category)
Psychology
The toilet is one of the few places we can be unseen, so being watched there mirrors fear that weakness or secrets will be exposed. It tends to appear when you feel pried into or monitored. Who was peeking shows where the unease comes from.
Folklore and history
As the many school-toilet ghost stories show, toilets in Japan have been imagined as frightening places where one is alone and defenseless. In old houses the privy often stood apart from the main building, and going there at night was dreaded. Dream readers see this as a warning of leaked secrets or meddling.

This site's view
In this site's view, it depends on whether you saw a face. Someone you know means you already sense something off in how close they stand. A faceless watcher points less to a person than to weariness with the world's gaze. Just an eye at a gap may be the embodiment of your own overly harsh self-surveillance.
Going deeper: our reading
These days we share parts of our lives through photos and posts, and deciding what to make public and what to keep private is far harder than it once was. In this site's reading, the dream shows the mind protesting fatigue at blurred boundaries around private life. Being expected to report everything to family, having colleagues pry into personal matters, finding that something you posted reached unexpected eyes: such experiences may make the dream more likely. Where the gaze came from helps. Over the top of the partition suggests interference from someone above you. Through the gap under the door, a sense of being intruded on before you noticed. Through a window, worry about the wider world's eyes. This is our speculation, but if you noticed and spoke up clearly, you are growing the strength to say "no further."
What to do on waking
Turn off phone notifications for a while today and make some deliberately unwatched time. If you feel you have overshared somewhere, simply hold back a little next time.

In Japan, people once tried to turn a worrying dream for the better: a baku charm under the pillow, telling the dream to a nandina bush, or reciting an old dream-turning poem. Read the column on dream trading and dream-turning
