Psychology
Catching a fluttering butterfly reflects a wish to win something or someone hard to reach. It may connect to childhood bug-catching, a revival of pure curiosity. The feel of it in your hands is the clue.
Folklore and history
Butterflies have long symbolized beauty and love in poetry and art. The ancient Chinese thinker Zhuangzi famously dreamed he was a butterfly and wondered which was the dreamer. Dream lore often reads catching one as getting what you long for.

This site's view
In this site's view, note whether wing dust stayed on your fingers. If it did, the dream shows the cost of possession: what you caught can no longer fly as before. Longing is beautiful because it is distant; if you felt any guilt after catching it, trust that feeling.
Going deeper: our reading
In Japan's Showa era, chasing insects through summer fields with a net was a familiar pastime for many children and even a common holiday homework project. The breath-held tension of the swing and the thrill of knowing you had caught something stay somewhere in the body into adulthood. In this site's reading, catching a butterfly may show the heart wanting to taste that absorption once more. Catching it with a net suggests you aim to seize a goal through preparation. Grabbing it bare-handed suggests a season of acting on momentum and instinct. A butterfly landing on your hand suggests what you seek is drawing near without being chased. This is our speculation, but releasing it at once means what you truly wanted was the glow of the chase itself.
What to do on waking

Turning a bad dream
In Japan, people once tried to turn a worrying dream for the better: a baku charm under the pillow, telling the dream to a nandina bush, or reciting an old dream-turning poem. Read the column on dream trading and dream-turning
