Psychology
A comb untangles strand by strand. It mirrors a wish to sort confused thoughts or knotted relationships; if tangles will not come out, the problem may be too complex to solve alone.
Folklore and history
In the Kojiki, Izanagi fleeing the underworld throws the teeth of his comb, which turn into bamboo shoots and slow his pursuers. Yet because kushi echoes the words for suffering and death, many say never to pick up a comb from the road.

This site's view
In this site's view, ask whose hair you combed. Your own means restoring yourself; another's shows care. Endlessly combing a stranger's long hair, as in old ghost tales, may be someone's abandoned feelings asking you to untangle them.
Going deeper: our reading
A boxwood comb, it is said, gains lustre and suits the hair better the longer it is used and cared for with camellia oil. Some families pass one from mother to daughter and use it for decades. On busy mornings, a parent combing and tying a child's hair is an intimate moment in many homes. In this site's reading, a comb dream can mirror bonds that grow through repeated care and feelings handed down. Using a grandmother's or mother's old comb suggests you are putting her values and kindness to use. Several missing teeth may show awareness that a long relationship or habit is starting to fray. Combing a child's hair, or being combed as a child, may reveal a wish to receive or give unspoken love. This is our speculation, but people who have this dream may know that quiet daily care is what grows a bond.
