Regret over something you saw, or being swept along by information.
Category: Urban legends & online lore (how to read this category)
Psychology
Watching a forbidden video suggests regret over something you saw and the sense that you cannot un-know it. Vivid images stick in memory and are processed in sleep; the dream may be working through something you cannot shake.
Folklore and history
The idea of a video that curses its viewers became widely known through the 1998 hit film Ringu. Placing a curse in an everyday videotape brought a new kind of fear beyond the haunted house, and the motif lives on in tales of online videos and streams.

This site's view
In this site's view, the dream swings between regret at having looked and a wish to see. Watching to the end means you are ready for the truth; looking away means some information is still too much. A familiar place on screen points to memories tied to it.
Going deeper: our reading
The cursed video motif began in the videotape era and has been retold each time viewing devices changed: DVDs, online videos, smartphones. The easier it became to watch, the closer the fear of seeing something by accident came. In this site's reading, those who have this dream may be worn out by information flooding their eyes that they never chose. Waking just as a figure on screen seemed about to turn suggests rising worry that what you took in concerns you. Switching off the television yourself shows you still have the power to choose what you watch. Watching with someone suggests you share the same anxiety. This is our speculation, but appearing in the video yourself may reflect concern about how others see you, especially online. Remember, too, that it is a fiction enjoyed as film material.
