Psychology
A dirty face reflects fear of embarrassment or seeming unworthy. Talking to people unaware of the dirt suggests you feel others see flaws you do not. Wiping it quickly shows you have the strength to recover.
Folklore and history
The idiom "to smear mud on someone's face" means to disgrace them. Since the face carried the honour of family and group, dream readers see a dirty face as a warning that your actions affect others' standing.

This site's view
In this site's view, the colour of the dirt matters: mud for honest toil, ink or soot for malice or rumour, blood for wounded ties. Whoever pointed it out often appears as one of your few true allies.
Going deeper: our reading
Some dirt on the face is shameful, some is a badge of honour: smudges from fieldwork or cooking are proof of hard work. In this site's reading, it matters whether you remember how your face got dirty. Dirt picked up while working suggests concern that your efforts are not being seen correctly. Mud splashed by a passing car reflects fear of trouble that is not your fault. Dirt from playing with children hints at a wish to enjoy yourself without worrying about appearances. If water would not run or wiping only spread the dirt, you may want to apologise but cannot find the moment. If others' faces were dirty instead, you may be worried about their reputation. This is our speculation, but conscientious people may be the ones most likely to read this dream as a warning to themselves.

Turning a bad dream
In Japan, people once tried to turn a worrying dream for the better: a baku charm under the pillow, telling the dream to a nandina bush, or reciting an old dream-turning poem. Read the column on dream trading and dream-turning
