Psychology
A curse dream shows guilt over unfinished business or things you have neglected, appearing as punishment. Suppressed guilt tends to surface as vague dread that something bad will happen.
Folklore and history
Japan feared the anger of those who died unjustly and developed goryo worship, enshrining such spirits as gods to calm them. Sugawara no Michizane, exiled on false charges, became the deity Tenjin, now loved as a god of learning. Fear and reverence went hand in hand.

This site's view
In this site's view, this is a dream of remembering, not punishment. As Michizane became a guardian, a curse faced squarely turns into protection. Recall what cursed you: an unused object, someone you never apologised to, or a hometown or grave you have not visited.
Going deeper: our reading
Beneath fear of divine retribution there is often guilt that you may have treated something carelessly. When tearing down an old house, discarding long-used tools or felling an ancient tree, people have joined their hands and given thanks before letting go. This reflects a delicate Japanese sensibility that extends feeling even to objects and places and pays respect to what has long been part of life. In this site's reading, people who dream of retribution often worry whether they showed proper respect when letting something go or bringing it to an end. This is our speculation, but such a dream after moving or a big clean-out suggests slight regret about things discarded in haste or places left behind. If apologising in the dream calmed the curse, your heart knows that facing it with courage will ease the guilt. Gratitude is the surest way to make peace.
