Psychology

Evacuation dreams show self-protection at work. Unlike fleeing, the weight falls on reaching a safe place, so where you headed reveals the kind of security you now seek.

Folklore and history

In disaster-prone Japan, high ground, shrine and temple grounds and schools became places of refuge. Reaching safety is read as averting trouble; discomfort at the shelter hints at feeling cramped in your present life.

This site's view

In this site's view, notice what you carried out. In a crisis we grab what truly matters: a bankbook, a photo, someone's hand. That is the contents of your heart's emergency bag. Leaving empty-handed may mean you long to start over with nothing.

Going deeper: our reading

Japanese schools hold regular evacuation drills, and many people remember crawling under desks or lining up in the schoolyard for roll call. In some regions, children even wore padded protective hoods to file out. In this site's reading, notice whether the evacuation was calm like a drill or frantic like a real emergency. Moving in an orderly way suggests confidence in your preparation or a wish to lean on set procedures. Fleeing in a rush shows a sense of being swept along by change you could not prepare for. This is our speculation, but a dream where you were desperate to bring family, an elderly parent or a pet rather than yourself reflects the weight of having many to protect. If someone led you by the hand, it may be permission to rely on others for now. Hearing your name at roll call also means belonging.

What to do on waking
