Psychology
A magic circle reflects a wish for protective boundaries or the will to give a wish concrete form. Jung saw circular mandala-like figures as symbols of wholeness, and the circle may show the mind gathering scattered thoughts into one.
Folklore and history
Magic circles appear in European grimoires of the medieval and early modern eras; the practitioner stood inside for protection during rites. In Japan the five-pointed star linked to Onmyodo, and often to Abe no Seimei, served as a charm against evil.

This site's view
In this site's view, whether it was complete is key. A finished circle means plans are coming together; a broken or fading line points to a gap or doubt. Alone inside means you seek protection; with someone, cooperation.
Going deeper: our reading
Drawing a circle is not only a magician's act. Children scratch rings on the ground to hop through, sumo wrestlers fight inside a round ring, and school sports days are marked out with chalk circles. A single line declaring "inside here is special" seems to be an old human instinct. In this site's reading, magic-circle dreams tend to come when you want clearer limits against people stepping into your space. Drawing the circle yourself means you are redrawing your own boundaries; being placed inside a circle someone else drew suggests the strain of living by another's rules. Stepping outside it shows readiness to lower your guard and engage with the world. This is our speculation, but people who struggle to say no may be the ones who dream of drawing lines. Drawing a line is not rejection; it is self-respect.
