Psychology

Mixing reflects a wish to unite different ideas, people or roles. Jung studied alchemy as a picture of opposites joining to create something new, and a mixing dream may likewise show the mind integrating inner conflicts.

Folklore and history

Cooking, compounding medicine, mixing paints: blending is basic to daily life and creativity, and secret recipes were treasured and guarded. In dream lore a good blend means harmony; separation means disagreement.

Going deeper: our reading

Making mayonnaise at home, pour the oil in all at once and it separates; only by adding it gradually while whisking does it turn smooth. Uniting things that resist mixing takes patience and steady hands, and the same is true of bringing different people or ideas together. In this site's reading, people who dream of mixing stand between people of different temperaments or positions, carefully trying to unite them. The scene matters. Mixing by hand suggests adjusting relationships by instinct; using a machine, impatience to reach a quick conclusion. Someone else mixing your things without asking may reflect fear that what you value is being diluted for others' convenience. This is our speculation, but endless mixing may show the option of leaving things that will not blend as they are.

Turning a bad dream

In Japan, people once tried to turn a worrying dream for the better: a baku charm under the pillow, telling the dream to a nandina bush, or reciting an old dream-turning poem. Read the column on dream trading and dream-turning
