Psychology
A net spreads out to catch, so it stands for ambition or the web of relationships around you. Catching fish or insects shows active pursuit; being caught yourself reflects feeling trapped by others' plans or rules.
Folklore and history
Fishing nets sustained coastal life and festivals praying for big catches. Buddhist thought speaks of Indra's net, where a jewel at every knot reflects all the others, showing how everything is connected. A full net means rising fortune.
Driving to a haunted spot on a remote mountain road or old byway, a dead battery from leaving the lights on during a long stop can strand you somewhere it's hard to call for help. Keeping a set of booster cables in the car lets another vehicle jump-start yours.

This site's view
In this site's view, it depends on which side of the net you were on. Casting it means you can seize chances now; struggling inside means you feel moved by someone else's plan. A torn net shows either what you miss or a way out.
Going deeper: our reading
The size of a net's mesh decides what it catches and what it lets go. Fine mesh traps tiny fish, while coarse mesh lets young ones slip through. Fishermen still mend torn nets by hand. In this site's reading, net dreams can show how you choose what to scoop up in life and what to let pass. Trying to catch everything with fine mesh may mean you are straining not to miss even the smallest chance. Watching small fish slip through suggests you can let go of what you do not need now. Quietly mending a torn net shows you rebuilding frayed relationships or work one knot at a time. This is our speculation, but running across a summer field with a bug net as in childhood reflects a wish to recover the freedom of chasing things without counting gains and losses.
What to do on waking
Choose one thing to catch today and let the rest slip through. A net that is not greedy keeps what matters.
