Psychology
Nostalgic dreams tend to come when you need to feel your footing. Psychology treats nostalgia not as mere backward longing but as something that eases loneliness and anxiety and reminds you that you are still the same person. The busier and more changeable life gets, the more the mind calls up old scenes.
Folklore and history
In classical Japan, dreams were a path to reach loved ones and distant homes, giving rise to the word yumeji, the dream road. Homesick dreams recur in old poetry and travel writing. Dream lore usually reads a calm visit to a familiar place as a sign of recovery.
On long investigations or drives between locations, a dead phone or flashlight battery can end the trip early. A spare power source is worth carrying.

This site's view
In this site's view, ask whether your present self was there. If you were a child again, you want back a lost openness. If you stood in the old house as you are now, you went back to check on something. A slight wrongness in the scene may mean memory has quietly rewritten itself to fit who you are today.
Going deeper: our reading
In nostalgic dreams, sounds and smells sometimes bring memories before scenery does: the chime that rang through town at dusk, the smell of school lunch, the tatami scent of a grandparent's house. Many Japanese towns broadcast a melody over public loudspeakers each evening, and plenty of people say it recalls walking home as a child. In this site's reading, a sound or smell that stood out shows your heart seeking the security of a time when you were protected. An old friend appearing at their former age suggests you are visiting not them but the self you were with them. This is our speculation, but a beloved place demolished or changed may be your mind accepting that the past will not return in the same form. Even in that loneliness there is quiet strength. If you woke full of nostalgia, bring one thing from that time back into your life.
What to do on waking
Recall one place or person from the dream and write down what you were good at back then. A forgotten strength may help with today's problem.
