Psychology
An Obon dream reflects ties to family and ancestors and a sense of your roots. It often draws on summer memories of homecoming and grave visits, searching nostalgia for what supports you now.
Folklore and history
Obon derives from the Buddhist Ullambana rite: ancestral spirits are welcomed home with fires and seen off with farewell fires or floating lanterns. Cucumber horses and eggplant oxen are said to bring spirits quickly and carry them back slowly.

This site's view
In this site's view, ask whether you were welcoming or sending off. Welcoming fires mean you need support and are calling on family memories; farewell fires and lanterns mean you can at last accept a parting calmly.
Going deeper: our reading
For many people, Obon is both a time to welcome ancestors and the season to return home. After crowded trains and jammed highways, you arrive to the smell of mosquito coils, fruit offered at the altar and the noisy voices of young relatives. In some areas Bon dances are held,, where returnees and locals dance together. In this site's reading, people who dream of Obon often miss not only the departed but also a place to return to and the people who knew them long ago. This is our speculation, but watching the Bon dance from outside the circle reflects slight worry about whether you still belong in your hometown or family. Spending Obon in an empty family home suggests the heart quietly accepting sadness at how the family has changed. Honour your ancestors, and turn your thoughts to your family today as well.
