Gratitude, prayer and ties to the unseen. Offering with care means protection; stealing or neglecting offerings warns that gratitude has slipped.

Psychology
Offerings give shape to gratitude and prayer toward the unseen or the departed. In dreams they may show thanks left unspoken, or a wish to be watched over. Eating offerings without permission may reflect guilt or unease about taking too much.
Folklore and history
In Japan, rice, water, seasonal fruit and flowers are offered at household altars, shrines and graves; food offered to kami at shrines is called shinsen. Afterwards the offerings are eaten as osagari, a way of sharing in the divine blessing. At Obon, offerings are prepared with special care for returning ancestors.

This site's view
In this site's view, everything depends on whom the offering was for. Offering a late loved one's favourite food means your inner dialogue with them continues. A chill at strangers' offerings at an unknown shrine may urge you to notice debts and bonds received unawares. Fresh or wilted offerings show how well those bonds are tended.
Going deeper: our reading
The cucumber horse and aubergine ox made for Obon are known to carry a wish: that ancestors ride home quickly on the horse and return slowly on the ox. An offering holds less the object itself than the time spent choosing it for someone. In this site's reading, the dream changes depending on whether you were choosing the offering or had already placed it. Hesitating over what to offer means you are still searching for a way to give shape to your feelings for someone. Finding the offering slightly diminished the next morning may reflect a wish to feel your thoughts were received. This is our speculation, but offering at the altar of a stranger's home suggests you are noticing debts of kindness beyond family ties. If your heart was calm as you pressed your hands together, that bond is already peacefully made.
What to do on waking
Think of someone who helped you, or a loved one who has passed, and silently thank them. If you have a home altar, simply changing the water is enough.

Turning a bad dream
In Japan, people once tried to turn a worrying dream for the better: a baku charm under the pillow, telling the dream to a nandina bush, or reciting an old dream-turning poem. Read the column on dream trading and dream-turning
