Psychology
A painter stands for turning inner scenery into something visible. Painting yourself suggests a need to express; being painted suggests concern about how others see you.
Folklore and history
The Chinese tale behind the phrase "adding the eyes to the dragon" tells of a painted dragon flying off once its eyes were drawn. Japan has many legends of painted tigers or horses slipping out at night. Painters in dreams often signal blossoming talent.

This site's view
In this site's view, notice the colors. Bright ones mean you are repainting your life in a positive light; black and gray mean hidden feelings want to be let out. An unfinished canvas quietly reminds you that your life is still a work in progress.
Going deeper: our reading
Van Gogh famously painted many self-portraits in his short life. It is said he could not afford models, but repeatedly painting the face in the mirror was surely also a way of re-examining himself; for a painter, painting is seeing itself. In this site's reading, the dream changes greatly depending on whether you were painting or being painted. Painting someone's portrait as the artist suggests a wish to look closely at that person's true self and understand them. Sitting still as a painter's model shows a mixture of wanting and fearing to know how you appear to others. This is our speculation, but a finished portrait of you that looked nothing like you expected points to a gap between the self you imagine and the self others see. Painting a self-portrait in a mirror may mean you need time to face yourself quietly.
