Psychology

A pet dream is a clear case of the continuity hypothesis: the being you care about most by day appears at night. Pets accept us unconditionally, so the dream may show a need for a safe place.

Folklore and history

Dogs and cats fill Japanese folktales, from grateful dogs to shape-shifting cats. Today pet funerals and memorials are common, and many feel a late pet in a dream has come to visit.

This site's view

In this site's view, meaning lies in who cares for whom. A pet snuggling up reveals your own wish to be cared for; a lost pet shows fear of neglecting something precious; a late pet running happily means your grief is healing.

Going deeper: our reading

Dogs and cats live far shorter lives than we do, and most owners know from the start that a day of farewell will come. In this site's reading, that acceptance sometimes surfaces in dreams. Someone living with an ageing dog or cat who dreams of it running about as a youngster may be treasuring the time that remains. A pet from your childhood suggests a longing to return to that family and that self; caring for an animal you have never owned hints that something new you want to protect is taking shape. A pet that speaks in human words may be your own unspoken feelings trying to reach you. This is our speculation, but if you remember the warmth of touching your pet in the dream, that may be the memory of the very comfort holding you up today.

What to do on waking

Summer ruin exploration traps heat under a roof and walls, and combined with the walk there and back, heatstroke risk runs high. An ice vest that cools your core directly just by slipping ice packs into pockets at the sides and back needs no power and layers over or under your other gear.
