Psychology
A python coiling around its prey can symbolize a slowly suffocating situation: work pressure or relationships you cannot refuse, taking the form of a great snake.
Folklore and history
The word python comes from Python, the serpent of Delphi slain by Apollo in Greek myth. In Japan snakes are tied to water and wealth deities, the bigger the stronger. Its Japanese name means brocade snake, for its patterns.

This site's view
In this site's view: coiled or watching? Painfully coiled, it is time to break free. Coiled without pain, it may be a strong bond rather than a trap. Admiring its pattern from afar foretells great power or wealth.
Going deeper: our reading
Some pythons coil around their clutch of eggs and stay with them for weeks, and some are known to warm them by twitching their muscles to make heat. The same body that crushes prey wraps and protects its young. In this site's reading, whether the coiling felt like a squeeze or an embrace is the key to reading your relationships. If being wrapped felt warm and drowsily safe, you are cherished almost to the point of over-protection. If it tightened the moment you tried to slip free, that love may be costing you your freedom. If you were the one coiling around something, it is time to check whether your wish to protect is binding someone. This is our speculation, but people troubled by a parent or partner may taste both comfort and suffocation in this single dream.
