Psychology
Rewinding time embodies counterfactual thinking, the "if only" mind. It tends to appear when you regret something, as the mind tries to digest the event by replaying it.
Folklore and history
The proverb that spilled water never returns to the tray says time cannot be undone, yet tales of going back and redoing things have always fascinated people. Dream lore reads rewinding as lingering regret, or a coming second chance.
A handy pair for getting a closer look at a distant view or a dim, hard-to-see spot.

This site's view
In this site's view, return to the moment you rewound to. A better outcome means you have begun to forgive the past; the same ending each time says it may be time to accept it. Such dreams may be less about changing the past than making peace with it.
Going deeper: our reading
The idea of rewinding spread from videotapes and cassettes, which you wound back to a favourite scene or song, and in the tape era there was a short wait while it rewound. Now a swipe of a finger returns you to any moment instantly, but life has no such button. In this site's reading, the most important clue is which moment you wanted to return to. Going back a few minutes to rephrase something suggests a small recent regret still catches at your heart. Returning to a particular scene years ago shows a wish to re-examine what a decision made then has meant for who you are now. This is our speculation, but rewinding only to find you could watch the scene from outside is a sign your mind is realising that while the past cannot be changed, the way you see it can.
What to do on waking
Write down one lesson from something you regret. The past cannot be redone, but it can teach.

Turning a bad dream
In Japan, people once tried to turn a worrying dream for the better: a baku charm under the pillow, telling the dream to a nandina bush, or reciting an old dream-turning poem. Read the column on dream trading and dream-turning
