Psychology
A familiar road that turns into a strange one as you walk mirrors fear that the ground of your life is shifting unnoticed. Dream scenes are stitched from memory fragments, so sudden changes of place are common. But if it frightened you, you may feel unable to keep up with real changes.
Folklore and history
All over Japan there are tales of being bewitched by a fox: walking in circles on a night road, or getting lost on a path you know well. Some legends speak of spirits that lead travellers astray. Roads carried people to their goals but could also carry them into the other world. Dream readers see it as time to reconsider your course.

This site's view
In this site's view, recall where the new road led. A childhood route to school means something left in the past is calling; an unknown mountain path is a doorway to a self you have not met. But if you kept returning to the same corner, you are not bewitched: you may be repeating the same choice.
Going deeper: our reading
Real towns change bit by bit too. A favourite shop becomes another, land readjustment reshapes the streets, and on returning home after years you get lost on roads you thought you knew. Even a phone map may point to an old route and lead you to a dead end. In this site's reading, the dream can mirror bewilderment at scenery that changed while you were away. If your hometown streets kept filling with unfamiliar shops as you walked, a place you thought of as home may have moved on without you. If a map app kept rewriting the route, advice and information you relied on may no longer fit your situation. This is our speculation, but the dream may signal a time to learn the way again on your own feet.
What to do on waking
