Psychology
Rolling can mirror being carried by momentum rather than will. Rolling downhill unable to stop shows fear of losing control; rolling happily on grass may reflect a wish for childlike freedom.
Folklore and history
In the Japanese folktale of the rolling rice ball, an old man chases it into a mouse's burrow and receives treasure. Chasing something that rolls opens unexpected worlds. The West has a rolling stone gathers no moss.

This site's view
In this site's view, whether you or an object rolled matters. You rolling means change has swept you up. Chasing a rolling object means you pursue a chance or bond slipping away. Recall where it ended to see where change leads.
Going deeper: our reading
In judo and aikido, beginners are often said to start by learning ukemi, the art of falling: curling up and rolling to disperse the impact and avoid serious injury. Strength rests not on never falling but on falling well. Some also remember the world turning a full circle during a forward roll in PE. In this site's reading, a rolling dream reflects not only fear of being swept along or a wish for freedom, but the resilience of rolling well so you can rise again. Rolling over with a fall's momentum and springing up smoothly suggests you can absorb failure softly and move on. Stiffening and hurting with every roll may mean fear of failure makes you take each blow head-on. This is our speculation, but a scene looking new after a forward roll signals a time when turning upside down lets you see things from a fresh angle.
What to do on waking

Turning a bad dream
In Japan, people once tried to turn a worrying dream for the better: a baku charm under the pillow, telling the dream to a nandina bush, or reciting an old dream-turning poem. Read the column on dream trading and dream-turning
