About this reading: Seimei Handan (name divination) is a uniquely Japanese practice that reads fortune from the stroke count of the kanji making up a name. It splits the stroke counts of the family and given names, and how they connect, into several categories — Heaven, Personality, Earth, Outer, and Total — each carrying its own meaning. It's a relatively modern practice, systematized in the last century or so, but it's still widely consulted when choosing a name today.
Part of why name divination still holds appeal may be that a name is one of the very few fate-related elements adults can actually choose before a person is even born — fixed for life, yet chosen in advance. As we see it here, its real value lies less in correctly calling a stroke count lucky or unlucky and more in the pause it gives the people doing the naming to sit with that choice.

In East Asia there was once a custom of not speaking a person's true name carelessly. The word imina, used for a person's real name, is linked to imi-na, the "name to be avoided," and even in life it was considered improper to call someone by it. The reason was the belief that a name was tightly bound to a person's spiritual self. This custom arose in China and spread to Japan, where it gave rise to a culture of using different names and nicknames depending on the situation.
The bond between name and soul also appears in mountain lore. If someone calls your name from behind on a mountain path, do not answer: reply, and you may be taken away and never return. Warnings like this survive in many regions, and mountain workers are said to have called one another by house names or nicknames instead of their real ones. Even the telephone greeting moshi moshi carries a folk belief: foxes cannot say it, and ghosts cannot repeat moshi twice.
As we see it here, name divination reads a name through its form, the stroke count, while these legends feared the name as a sound. This is speculation, but the moment you turn around at the sound of your own name is the moment you are most unguarded. People may have sensed that gap as a doorway through which unseen things could reach them. The care taken in choosing a name and the caution against revealing it lightly may well be two prayers grown from the same root.
