Read about Kyusei Kigaku Compatibility

About this reading: Nine Star Ki compatibility compares each partner's star, one of nine derived from their birth year. The nine stars are rooted in the ancient Chinese Five Elements theory (Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water), and the relationships between elements — supportive cycles versus conflicting ones — form the basic logic behind which star pairings are considered favorable or difficult.

Nine Star Ki compatibility is read through just two kinds of elemental relationship — supportive and conflicting — because the underlying Eastern philosophy doesn't reduce a pairing to simply matching or not; it holds that both a supportive bond and a clashing one carry their own meaning. Even a "conflicting" pairing is sometimes described as one where each side pushes the other to grow. As we see it here, rather than avoiding someone your chart calls conflicting, it's more useful in real life to know what kind of friction that relationship tends to bring.

Lore column: Choose the Wrong Direction for a Wedding and Seven Die: The Curse of Konjin

A short read on the legends and strange tales around this reading, with this site's own view.

At the root of reading fortune by direction and by year, as Nine Star Ki does, stand the direction gods of Onmyodo. Among the most feared was Konjin. Konjin was said to delight in slaughter and to wander from place to place as the calendar signs and seasons changed, so whatever direction it occupied at a given time was deemed gravely unlucky.

Digging the earth, building a house, moving, setting out on a journey or taking a bride in Konjin's direction was strictly avoided. Break the taboo, it was said, and seven members of the family would be killed, a belief called Konjin shichisatsu, the seven killings of Konjin; if the household had fewer than seven, the disaster was even said to spill over to the neighbors. Heian aristocrats reportedly practiced katatagae, spending a night somewhere else first so they could approach their destination from a safe direction.

That present-day Nine Star Ki still keeps unlucky directions with ominous names such as ankensatsu, the hidden sword kill, and go-o-satsu, the five-yellow kill, may be a trace of that old sense that danger lurks in direction itself.

As we see it here, Konjin's curse was a way of giving unseen misfortune a cause and an escape route. This is our own conjecture, but in times when sudden illness or death could not be explained, people may have given their fear a shape by thinking, "we went the wrong way," and believed they could protect themselves through the detour of katatagae. Taking a bride may have been singled out because welcoming someone new into the household was that great a gamble.
