Psychology
Being shot reflects shock at the unexpected or a sense of being targeted. Unlike stabbing, the distance means an unseen attacker and tension over where the next blow will come from.
Folklore and history
Firearms reached Japan in the Warring States era and transformed warfare, bringing a new fear of death from afar. Yet dream lore sometimes reads being shot as having your heart pierced, a sign of love or deep emotion.

This site's view
In this site's view, did you see the shooter? An unseen shooter means fear of unseen eyes, such as online judgement; a visible one means you already know the cause. No pain means the fear is smaller than you think.
Going deeper: our reading
Guns are strictly controlled in Japan, so most people meet them only on screens, in films and games. Dream gunfire is therefore often built less from experience than from images of the moment everything suddenly changes. A fast bullet can even arrive before its sound:, the impact before understanding. In this site's reading, the dreamer has often just been struck by news or change their mind has not caught up with. Running on after being shot suggests you keep pushing without time to admit you are hurt. Being shot while shielding someone hints that you are taking on others' pain. A toy gun or water pistol suggests a serious-seeming event may become a funny story in time. This is our speculation, but someone rushing to you afterwards is a sign it is fine to ask for help.
