Psychology
Being chased is one of the most common typical dreams. Antti Revonsuo's threat simulation theory holds that dreams rehearse escape from danger. A killer as the pursuer signals intense stress.
Folklore and history
Stories of masked killers relentlessly pursuing victims became a horror film formula from the late 1970s into the 1980s. In Japan around the same time, rumours of the Kuchisake-onna spread among children nationwide. Modern nightmares borrow from such tales.

This site's view
In this site's view, did you turn to see its face? Running without looking means you cannot yet face the problem; a familiar face, or your own, may mean what hunts you is your own harshness.
Going deeper: our reading
In horror films the killer often just walks, yet somehow catches up with a victim running for their life. In dreams, too, legs often refuse to move and voices fail, which is sometimes explained by the way our muscles relax during the sleep stage richest in dreams. In this site's reading, people with this dream often feel trapped by deadlines, duties or social pressure that keep coming however hard they try. Hiding breathless in a cupboard suggests you feel you can only wait for the trouble to pass. Being unable to call for help hints that you cannot put your distress into words. A killer wearing an acquaintance's mask may reflect wariness you find hard to admit. This is our speculation, but the moment your legs moved again suggests strength to change things is returning.

Turning a bad dream
In Japan, people once tried to turn a worrying dream for the better: a baku charm under the pillow, telling the dream to a nandina bush, or reciting an old dream-turning poem. Read the column on dream trading and dream-turning
