Psychology
Its bell-like song suggests inner calm and harmony — a longing for something clear amid daily noise. A distant song may mean peace still feels out of reach.
Folklore and history

This site's view
In this site's view, it recalls the song of a short life; autumn singers do not see winter. Beauty moves us because it ends. If the song felt sad, you may want to cherish passing time and people while you can.
Going deeper: our reading
The bell cricket's song is made by the male, rubbing his wings together to call a mate. That clear sound is an earnest signal sent to carry life onward. In this site's reading, the dream reflects both a voice you want to send and a voice you want heard. Holding the cage and listening closely suggests a wish to pay more attention to the small pleas and true feelings of someone near you. If the singing stopped and all went still, it may be regret over feelings that ended unspoken. This is our speculation, but many crickets singing together may mean people who share your feelings are gathering around you. Listening on autumn nights is also practice in hearing your own heart.
What to do on waking
Tonight, dim the lights and listen at the window for three minutes to the sounds outside. If there is someone you miss, reach out before the season turns.
