Psychology
Diving in a flash to catch fish, the kingfisher stands for focus and inspiration. A blue streak crossing your dream may be a fleeting chance or idea. Gazing at it means room for beauty has returned.
Folklore and history
Called the jewel of clear streams, its Japanese name shares a character with jade. In Greek myth grieving Alcyone became a bird, and the calm winter days named for her, the halcyon days, are linked with the kingfisher.

This site's view
In this site's view, the kingfisher announces the calm after grief, as in the myth. If you have recently lost something, quiet days are near. Muddy water means you need time to let your mind clear.
Going deeper: our reading
The kingfisher once vanished from city rivers, then returned to urban parks and nearby streams as the water was cleaned up. It perches still on a branch watching the surface, sometimes hovers in place, then dives in one swift motion. In this site's reading, this dream speaks of things that return and the strength to wait. A pleasure you thought lost, a bond with someone you drifted from, or a forgotten dream may come back as conditions improve. Watching it sit motionless suggests a time to wait calmly for your chance; seeing the dive says it is time to act. Vanishing into its nest tunnel in a riverbank mirrors you tending something precious out of sight. This is our speculation, but a bird that loves clear water seems to announce that your heart is slowly clearing.
What to do on waking
Watch water for one minute — a river, a pond or even a glass — and let your mind settle.
