○ A mirror of the mind Read less as luck and more as a mirror of how you are now
A symbol of freedom, hope and news. A bird soaring high hints that wishes may come true; a caged bird, that you feel confined.

Psychology
Birds often stand for freedom, the soul and messages from afar. Looking up at a high flyer suggests ideals and hope; flying as a bird, a wish to rise above your role and see widely. A caged bird shows constraint, chicks in a nest what you want to protect, and birdsong alone a premonition not yet in words.
Folklore and history
In Japanese myth Yamato Takeru became a white bird after death and flew away, and birds have long been seen as carriers of the soul. The crow Yatagarasu is said to have guided Emperor Jimmu from Kumano to Yamato; later it came to be pictured with three legs, and it is still honoured as a divine guide. Dream readers treat birds as heralds, with beautiful birds or bright song bringing good news.

This site's view
In this site's view, ask whether the bird was guiding you or watching you. A bird flying ahead, like Yatagarasu, is a guide to your next place. A bird staring down from a wire or roof may mean you worry too much about others' eyes. As a site named after the crow, we would rather read even a black bird as a guide than as a bad omen.
Going deeper: our reading
In Japan it has long been said that a house where swallows nest under the eaves will prosper, and many places keep the custom of watching over nests rather than removing them. Swallows come each spring and leave after raising their young. In this site's reading, a bird dream shows where your heart is facing through where the bird came from and where it returns. A bird straying into your home suggests news or a new encounter entering your life unexpectedly. Looking up at a nest under the eaves shows a growing wish to protect family or a place of belonging. Warming an injured bird in your palm may mean you want to care for someone weak, or yourself. This is our speculation, but watching migrating birds leave may show a heart that can let go and trust they will return.
What to do on waking
Find one bird in the sky and note where it flies. When you hesitate today, start with the errand in that direction.
