Psychology
Chasing and catching insects may revive the pure curiosity of childhood summers and a wish to examine things up close. Catching unpleasant bugs may instead show your mind trying to pin down a problem you dislike.
Folklore and history
The Heian-era collection Tsutsumi Chunagon Monogatari includes the tale of a princess who loved caterpillars. Japan also cherishes listening to autumn insects and summer bug catching as a childhood pastime. Dream readers see catching insects as curiosity bearing fruit.

This site's view
In this site's view, what you did with the insects matters. Keeping them in a cage to watch shows a wish to understand things by holding them close. Releasing them at once means knowing was the goal, not owning. If they lay still by morning, reflect on whether your curiosity is hurting someone.
Going deeper: our reading
Catching insects begins with knowing where they are: sap on a tree trunk, a lamp at night, dew in the grass. In this site's reading, people who dream of catching insects often want to recover the simple urge to know and to see for themselves, an urge they have been losing in daily life. Searching together with friends or family suggests you long for someone to share your curiosity with. Chasing insects alone and absorbed suggests you may lack time to lose yourself in something without interruption. This is our speculation, but catching insects amid the scenery of a childhood summer holiday may be the younger you, who could throw themselves into something without watching the clock, coming to visit. A small detour might be worth enjoying.
