The guard of the underworld: a gate you must pass, or a strict test.
Category: World mythology (how to read this category)
Psychology
A guard dog at the gate can symbolise a threshold you must cross — exams, reviews, a new circle. Its many heads may express the feeling of being watched from every side.
Folklore and history
Cerberus, usually three-headed, guards the gate of the underworld so the dead cannot escape. Heracles dragged him up as his final labour, and Orpheus lulled him with music. English still has "a sop to Cerberus" for a bribe that pacifies.

This site's view
In this site's view, Cerberus asks whether you pass by force or by heart. Heracles used strength, Orpheus music. Fighting means it is time to push through; soothing it means sincerity will open the way; only being barked at may mean you feel unprepared.
Going deeper: our reading
A guard dog's job is to protect a home and family. It may bark fiercely at strangers but is a reliable ally to those inside, and Cerberus too kept order as one who belonged within the gate. In this site's reading, the fear in this dream is both a wall that blocks you and the lookout you have posted in your own mind to protect what matters. Those who have been hurt before may find their inner guard barking loudest before new relationships or challenges. This is our speculation, but if Cerberus followed behind you or sat beside you, your wariness may be turning from enemy into ally. Three heads looking in different directions can mirror a mind watching several worries at once, work, family and self, and never resting.
