Psychology
Explosions suggest long-suppressed anger nearing its limit; the harder you push feelings down, the more violently they burst in dreams. They can also reflect shock at a sudden change in life.
Folklore and history
Fireworks flourished in Edo-period Japan, and summer displays are said to have carried prayers for the dead and for warding off misfortune. Loud light could be a purification. Dream lore reads explosions as sudden shifts in fortune.

This site's view
In this site's view, were you outside or inside the blast? Watching from afar means fear of others' emotions; a blast near or within you is your own limit. A bright scene after the smoke clears means the change is not a bad one.
Going deeper: our reading
With an explosion, the silence just before may be more frightening than the blast. Watching a fuse burn down, or sensing only that something is about to happen, is when people brace hardest. Daily life holds similar moments of trapped pressure rising, like a pressure cooker or a shaken fizzy drink. In this site's reading, people who dream of explosions often fear less the anger already released than the self who might one day burst. Struggling to stop an explosion before it happens reflects a kindness that dreads hurting others with your frustration. This is our speculation, but hearing only a bang without knowing what happened suggests vague anxiety at changes around you whose nature you cannot grasp. Checking with someone that you are both safe afterwards shows the mind sensing how strong your bonds remain after turmoil.

Turning a bad dream
In Japan, people once tried to turn a worrying dream for the better: a baku charm under the pillow, telling the dream to a nandina bush, or reciting an old dream-turning poem. Read the column on dream trading and dream-turning
