Psychology
Finding a key reflects a sense that a way out of a stuck problem is appearing. Keeping it carefully shows readiness to use a chance. Not knowing what it opens suggests you hold a talent or connection but have not yet seen how to use it.
Folklore and history
In the West the key motif is loved in charms and jewelry as something that opens the door to good luck. Dream readers see finding a key as a new path opening, and an old or beautiful key as unexpected fortune or wisdom.

This site's view
In this site's view, where the key lay tells you where the door is. On the street, the answer lies in daily life. Under the floor of an old house or in a stranger's drawer, a clue to your worry may sleep in your family history or past.
Going deeper: our reading
The shape of the key you found is a clue. A familiar flat key like a house key suggests an answer in everyday life you can try soon. In this site's reading, an ornate, old-fashioned key points to a large possibility not yet visible, a door that will take time to open. A key with a keyring or charm hints at someone who treasured it, so the answer may lie in a connection with a person. Trying it in door after door shows readiness to risk some failure. Handing it in to the police shows care to use even a lucky chance properly. The dream may visit people stuck on the same problem for a long time. This is our speculation, but if you remember the moment it fit the lock, that feeling may preview a real insight soon.
