Psychology
An old key reflects a sense that what you need now lies in past experience or forgotten memory. Holding it dear means you are recalling your old strength. Rusty and useless suggests you cling to ways of thinking that once worked but now hold you back.
Folklore and history
In Christian art Saint Peter is often shown holding the keys of heaven, making the key a symbol of authority to open great doors. In old Japanese homes, the storehouse key guarded the family's wealth. An old key can stand for inherited wisdom or duty.

This site's view
In this site's view, whether the key felt familiar matters. If it seemed to belong to your grandparents' or family home, it is time to revisit what you inherited. If it was unknown yet nostalgic, the dream may be pointing to a door of memories older than you, held by others or by the land.
Going deeper: our reading
In this site's reading, the material and shape of an old key show what kind of past it is trying to open. A rusted black iron key suggests heavy memories long left untouched. A dull brass gleam suggests warm memories or talents that have not faded with time. Old Japanese storehouses used handmade padlocks called ebi-jo, named for their shrimp-like curve, still treasured as antiques. Holding such a key may mean old-fashioned wisdom holds the answer. Searching for the matching lock shows you trying to apply past experience to present problems. If no lock fit, simply having the key may be the point. The dream may come after losing an older relative or while clearing out a family home. This is our speculation, but handing the key to someone means your turn to pass on what you inherited is near.
