Psychology
The Grim Reaper often stands for endings and renewal; psychologically, awareness of unavoidable change, deadlines or ageing given a single form. A reaper calling your name suggests a postponed decision's deadline is near. One standing far away usually reflects anxiety that is still vague.
Folklore and history
The skeleton with a scythe is said to have spread through European art in the late Middle Ages, when plague was rife. In Japan the storyteller San'yutei Encho adapted a Western tale into the rakugo "Shinigami" in the Meiji era, helping make the figure familiar. The Death card in tarot likewise signals an ending and a new start rather than literal death.

This site's view
In this site's view, a reaper dream asks who owns your time. As the rakugo reaper showed candles of life, the dream reaper confronts you not with how long you have but how you use it. A reaper who left without acting means you already know what must end. Bargaining with it reflects a heart torn between giving something up and protecting something else.
Going deeper: our reading
In many stories the grim reaper is a cold being without feeling. It comes to everyone equally, sparing no one for rank, wealth or the strength of their wishes. That impartiality is frightening, yet it also expresses a stern but fair truth: everyone moves toward the same end. In this site's reading, people who dream of the reaper are often facing a current they cannot change and being asked what they will choose anyway. This is our speculation, but walking quietly beside the reaper reflects a growing calm that accepts limited time rather than fearing the end. Watching the reaper head toward someone else may reveal a sense of coming change in a loved one and words you want to say while you can. Even a frightening dream is not a prophecy of misfortune.
