Psychology
A talisman or purification dream reflects a wish to cut off bad luck or to be protected. Psychologically, imagining a closing ritual can help the mind shift gears. Feeling lighter after purification signals worries lifting.
Folklore and history
Shinto priests purify by waving a wand called onusa. At the end of June and December, the great purification is held, with people passing through grass rings or transferring impurity to paper figures. Household talismans on the kamidana are renewed each year to refresh protection.
Exploring a ruin or mountain haunted spot often means bringing home mud- or water-stained boots, rain gear, or used wet wipes. A foldable, highly waterproof EVA bucket lets you bundle all the dirty items together, then rinse it out and fold it flat afterward.

This site's view
In this site's view, who was the purification for? Being purified yourself means it is time to set down unnoticed fatigue or heavy relationships. Posting talismans at home shows a wish to protect your space. A fallen talisman may mean you should redraw boundaries yourself.
Going deeper: our reading
Talismans and amulets are often obtained for someone else: parents receiving a charm for a child facing exams, families bringing home a talisman for a safe birth. Each holds a prayer for a person you cannot protect directly. In this site's reading, people who dream of talismans and purification are often carrying worries their own strength cannot solve. Being handed an amulet in a dream may be a moment to notice that you are cherished more than you think. This is our speculation, but going to a shrine to obtain a talisman for someone suggests frustration at wanting to protect a loved one yet being unable to do anything concrete. Feeling calm within shrine grounds signals a need to step away from daily noise and restore yourself. Honour the reverence these places deserve, and gently look at the worry the dream revealed.
What to do on waking
Clean your entrance and open the windows. Taking a little distance from a draining relationship is also a kind of purification.
