Psychology
A hedgehog reflects the pull between keeping people away to avoid hurt and still wanting closeness. The porcupine dilemma, drawn from Schopenhauer's parable and sometimes told with hedgehogs, describes how getting close wounds and staying apart leaves us cold.
Folklore and history
Hedgehogs have long been familiar in Europe, and old pictures and tales show them carrying fruit on their spines, a story never confirmed but a sign of affection for this plucky creature. Dream lore reads it as wariness, self-defence and a time to open up.

This site's view
In this site's view, was it curled up or peeking out? Curled tight means you have reasons to guard yourself and need not force openness; peeking out shows a wish to trust someone; resting on your palm means that closeness is already safe.
Going deeper: our reading
Baby hedgehogs are born with their spines tucked under a soft membrane, and the quills emerge only later. The spines are protection that grows once the animal meets the world, and a frightened hedgehog does not attack; it simply curls up. In this site's reading, the dreamer is not trying to hurt anyone but is raising quills so as not to be hurt again. If you were the hedgehog, you may be uneasy about your own recent coldness. Being shown someone's pet hedgehog hints that you are noticing a clumsy kindness nearby. One wandering a night garden suggests feelings that move only when no one is watching. This is our speculation, but whether the spines felt sharp or surprisingly soft shows how hard your guard has become.
What to do on waking
Send a small update to someone you half-trust. You need not lower every spine; one spine's width closer is enough.
