Psychology
A key is a pass to places only a few may enter. A key dream may reflect both a wish to guard secrets and a wish to open something closed. Losing your key and being locked out shows fear of losing your place. Handing someone a key means opening your heart to them. A heavy keyring suggests many burdens or secrets.
Folklore and history
Some fox statues at Inari shrines hold a key, said to be the key to the rice storehouse — a guardian role for the harvest. In the West, Saint Peter is said to hold the keys of heaven, symbolizing the authority to open its gates. Entrusting house keys meant trust everywhere. Finding a key hints at a solution; losing one warns of missed chances.

This site's view
In this site's view, notice whether you were locking or unlocking. If you went around locking everything, you may be sealing something in rather than keeping something out. If a room you sealed opened by itself, suppressed feelings or memories want out. A key protects, but it also seals.
Going deeper: our reading
Key dreams also include holding a bunch of many keys, or having a spare key made or given to you. In this site's reading, carrying so many keys that you cannot tell which fits reflects being entrusted with so many roles that you no longer know where to begin. Being handed a spare key shows that someone trusts you deeply, or that you wish to be trusted. Someone holding your spare key without permission may express worry about your space being invaded. Some people find an old key or one of an unfamiliar shape. This is our speculation, but that may be the heart quietly signalling that it is time to face again memories or dreams you locked away long ago. A key that will not fit the lock means a problem your current approach cannot open. Change the method, and another key may appear.
What to do on waking
Hold your keys and name what each one opens. If one is a mystery, recall a neglected problem that feels just as forgotten.
