A symbol of how you walk through life. New shoes mean a new start; losing them, uncertainty.

Psychology
Shoes can be read as how you walk through life and whether your feet are on the ground. They often represent position, direction and the base that supports you; their newness and fit show how your path feels.
Folklore and history
Japanese lore says putting on new footwear at night is unlucky, with customs such as marking the sole to avoid ill luck. In the West, a glass slipper famously finds its owner. Dream lore reads new shoes as a fresh start, lost ones as uncertainty.

This site's view
In this site's view, did you have only one shoe? A matching pair: you are ready to go. Just one: heart and action, or ideal and reality, are out of step. Someone else's shoes: you may be walking a path chosen for you. Look for a pair that fits.
Going deeper: our reading
In Japanese homes, taking off your shoes at the entrance is second nature, so shoe dreams often involve being unable to find your shoes at the door, or seeing removed shoes scattered about. In this site's reading, missing shoes at the entrance reflect uncertainty about where you will go home to or head next. Shoes not lined up neatly suggest that, amid busyness, your surroundings and feelings are not in order. Shoelaces that keep coming undone may express frustration at preparations that hold you back. Struggling to walk in unfamiliar high heels shows the fatigue of stretching yourself to behave as your position requires. This is our speculation, but shoes soaked through in the rain may be the heart quietly showing you your own perseverance, still walking even when things are not going your way. Wet shoes need time to dry.
What to do on waking
Line up the shoes at your door and wipe your everyday pair. Tidy footing helps you think calmly about where to go.
