○ A mirror of the mind Read less as luck and more as a mirror of how you are now
The lantern that should light your way turns strange: double-check the people or information you rely on.
Category: Japanese yokai (how to read this category)
Psychology
A lantern meant to light your way turning monstrous can show growing doubt about the information, people or standards you rely on. Light means safety; when it warps, you no longer know what to trust. Part of you hesitates to follow the guidance before you.
Folklore and history
The torn lantern with eyes and a mouth is a familiar figure from Edo toy prints and haunted shows. Lanterns lit night roads and also welcomed and sent off ancestors at Obon. Katsushika Hokusai painted a ghost's face emerging from a lantern, tying it closely to ghost stories.
Haunted-spot exploration often means long hours driving and waiting in the car from late night into early morning, often in mountain or rural areas with no convenience store nearby — a car fridge keeps drinks and snacks fresh for hours. Adjustable from -20°C to 20°C, for either refrigeration or freezing.

This site's view
In this site's view, the lantern ghost is a light that speaks. If it laughed, your worry is needless and your path is lit. If its flame was dying, stop leaning only on familiar people and methods; check things for yourself.
Going deeper: our reading
Lanterns light night roads and Obon, but they also decorate shrine approaches and streets on festival nights. Many also picture a red lantern hanging outside a cosy izakaya, an easy stop on the way home from work. Lantern light welcomes people and gathers them. In this site's reading, where the lantern hung changes the dream. One of a row of festival lanterns turning into a ghost suggests feeling out of place amid a lively crowd. A red izakaya lantern beckoning as a ghost may reflect being drawn to relaxation or invitations while worrying about being swept along. A lantern under your own eaves transforming suggests your heart senses unspoken change at home. A lantern bobbing ahead to guide you shows you sense something leading you even in unease. This is our speculation, but people who feel loneliest in crowded places may dream this most.
