Psychology
A moon hidden by clouds reflects intuition or true feeling you can no longer see clearly. Doubts or others' opinions may be clouding what you really feel. If the moon peeked through, the answer is already within you and will show itself with a little quiet time.
Folklore and history
A Japanese proverb says "clouds for the moon, wind for the blossoms", meaning good things tend to meet interference. Regret at clouds on a moon-viewing night runs through classical poetry. Dream readers read it as a temporary stall or misunderstanding.
A folding water tank for carrying drinking or hand-washing water to a haunted spot with no running water, whether in a ruin or the mountains. It folds flat when not in use, so you can keep it in the trunk or a disaster-prep bag, and it also helps during a long stakeout shoot.

This site's view
In this site's view, the clouds' color and thickness reveal what clouds your heart. Thin white clouds mean mild fatigue or passing doubt. Heavy black ones may be suspicion or unspoken guilt. If you sensed a presence while the ground went dark, it may be your own shadow, which you can face only without light.
Going deeper: our reading
When clouds hide the harvest moon, Japanese haiku calls it mugetsu, the moonless night, and poets have savoured imagining the unseen moon. In this site's reading, the dream is best read not by judging the hiddenness as bad but by watching how your heart moved meanwhile. Waiting quietly while picturing the hidden moon shows calm trust in your own sense even without quick answers. Clouds racing so the moon kept appearing and vanishing suggests feelings that sway day to day, deciding and then doubting. If someone beside you pointed and said there it is, someone may notice your true feelings before you do. Leaving before the clouds cleared may mean that rushing to conclusions nearly makes you miss what was about to appear. This is our speculation, but the dream may tell those who want everything clear that ambiguous times have meaning too.
What to do on waking
Do not rush decisions today; let one question rest overnight, and look for the moon from your window tonight.

Haunted-spot exploration often means long hours driving and waiting in the car from late night into early morning, often in mountain or rural areas with no convenience store nearby — a car fridge keeps drinks and snacks fresh for hours. Adjustable from -20°C to 20°C, for either refrigeration or freezing.
