Psychology
Rainbow colours symbolise many possibilities and rich emotion. They appear when the heart is open, but can also show indecision among options. The colour that stood out hints at your current focus.
Folklore and history
Rainbows are bridges between heaven and earth in many cultures, including Norse myth. The Chinese character for rainbow carries the insect-serpent radical because it was once imagined as a dragon-like creature. In Japan, rainbow colours signal wishes coming true.

This site's view
In this site's view, was it in the sky or on something close? Sky means distant ideals; clothes or a puddle mean possibility already lies in daily life. Broken colours suggest you need not force a single choice.
Going deeper: our reading
A rainbow appears when sunlight from behind you strikes water drops left in the air after rain. To see one, you must turn your back to the light and face where the rain lingers. Japan counts seven colours, but other cultures are said to count six or five, so the same rainbow holds a different number of colours depending on who looks. In this site's reading, rainbow dreams can show what you are trying to see after a hard time. A rainbow in a post-rain sky suggests you are finally able to look ahead after something painful. A double rainbow hints at hope for good fortune stacking up. Fleeting rainbow colours, like soap bubbles or oil on a puddle, reflect a wish to savour present happiness. This is our speculation, but trying to count the colours may show you accepting how differently you and others see things.
