Psychology
A rainbow symbolizes hope and recovery after hardship, relief at emerging from a hard time. Watching alone may reflect the sense of having overcome things yourself; with someone, a relationship on the mend. A rainbow that vanished quickly may show you cannot yet trust the calm that has come.
Folklore and history
Many cultures call the rainbow a bridge between heaven and earth: the road to the gods in Norse myth, a sign of covenant in the Old Testament, a pot of gold in Irish lore. The Chinese character for rainbow carries the insect radical because it was once imagined as a dragon or great serpent. Today many share the story of pets waiting at the Rainbow Bridge.

This site's view
In this site's view, only those who have walked through rain see this dream; your rain is lifting. If someone walked across to the far side, you may be quietly ready to accept a farewell. As the ancients sensed a living creature in it, the rainbow carries beauty and a trace of awe, a bridge linking those left behind to the other side.
Going deeper: our reading
A rainbow appears when the sun is behind you and raindrops ahead catch its light. So anyone looking at a rainbow is always standing with their back to the light, facing the rain. Because the angle shifts with your position, it is often said that each person sees their own rainbow. In this site's reading, you may feel brightness at your back while still gazing toward where the rain lingers: hope is already behind you, yet your eyes stay on the traces of something painful. Pointing out the rainbow to someone suggests a wish to share your joy; watching it silently hints at a precious wish you cannot yet tell anyone. This is our speculation, but if your dream rainbow had few colours, you may be underestimating what you are allowed to hope for.
What to do on waking
Write down one thing you overcame in recent months and thank yourself. If someone watched the rainbow with you, reach out to them.
