Category: Nature & weather (how to read this category)
Psychology
The sky in a dream mirrors your mood as weather. Blue sky means an open outlook; a low grey sky suggests thoughts circling in a narrow space. Looking up versus flying shows how strong your longing is.
Folklore and history
Japanese myth calls the gods' realm Takamagahara, the high plain of heaven, beyond human reach. Weather lore such as 'red evening, fair tomorrow' lives on. A clear dream sky is generally read as luck opening up.

This site's view
In this site's view, what matters is who shared the sky with you. Alone means you are seeking your own answer; with someone means wanting a shared future. An empty sky may be a quiet wish for the freedom of being no one in particular.
Going deeper: our reading
The Japanese word for dusk, tasogare, is said to come from a phrase meaning "who is that?", the hour when faces became hard to make out. Sunset was also called the hour of meeting demons, when people believed uncanny things were most likely to appear. In this site's reading, a sky dream depends on what time of day the sky showed. A dawn sky growing pale suggests a long period of doubt is ending; a sunset sky carries reluctance before something closes. If, under a dim dusk sky, you could not make out the face of the person beside you, you may be struggling to read someone close to you. This is our speculation, but those who remember the sky's colour may be sensitive to their own shifting moods.
What to do on waking
When you step out, look up for ten seconds at today's clouds. Just raising your eyes can loosen a tight chest.

Turning a bad dream
In Japan, people once tried to turn a worrying dream for the better: a baku charm under the pillow, telling the dream to a nandina bush, or reciting an old dream-turning poem. Read the column on dream trading and dream-turning
