Psychology
A sparrow mirrors small everyday joys and lively ties with those around you. Common everywhere, it stands for ordinary comfort; if its chatter grated, you may be tired of gossip and noise.
Folklore and history
In the folktale of the tongue-cut sparrow, the kind old man picks the small basket and finds treasure, while the greedy wife picks the big one and releases monsters. "Sparrow's tears" means a tiny amount.

This site's view
In this site's view, sparrows ask if you can choose the small basket. One landing on your hand means you can see small joys; a flock scattering hints greed is blinding you to them.
Going deeper: our reading
On cold days sparrows puff their feathers into round balls called fukura-suzume, a motif written with characters suggesting good fortune and used in obi knots and Japanese sweets. Sparrows live close to people, nesting in roof tiles and eaves, and are said to struggle away from human towns. In this site's reading, people who dream of sparrows often wish less for big events than for small daily comforts to continue. Watching puffed-up sparrows suggests a heart getting through a cold season by staying close to others; sparrows dust-bathing or splashing, a wish to wash off feelings and travel light; scattering rice for them, a wish to offer small kindness. This is our speculation, but if the dream warmed you, you may be regaining room to cherish ordinary days.
