Psychology
A swan mirrors longing for grace and purity and a deep bond. Serene above, paddling hard below, it stands for hidden effort; a pair of swans reflects a wish for a true connection.
Folklore and history
The Kojiki and Nihon Shoki say Yamato Takeru, after dying on his journey, flew away as a white bird, making the swan an image of the soul. In the West, tales of princesses turned into swans are famous through ballet.

This site's view
In this site's view, swans show both a soul departing and a bond forming. One flying far means letting something go; a pair together invites deeper ties. A black-looking swan asks if striving for purity denies your shadow.
Going deeper: our reading
In Andersen's tale The Ugly Duckling, an outcast chick finally learns it is a beautiful swan. It comforts anyone unsure of who they are now. In Japan swans are known as winter visitors from the north. In this site's reading, people who dream of swans often feel different from or lesser than others, yet still want to believe in their true selves. A grey chick turning into a swan suggests strength not yet recognized is growing; watching a flock on a winter lake, a longing for a place where travelers from afar can stay close; hearing swans take off, a time to move on to the next season. This is our speculation, but seeing a swan as your reflection may show that the way you see yourself is becoming kinder.
