Psychology
Sports dreams show competitiveness, drive and a wish for teamwork. Solo or team play reveals whether you want to go it alone or join forces; how well your body moved shows your confidence.
Folklore and history
Sumo in Japan began partly as a Shinto offering, held at shrines to pray for or divine a good harvest. Physical contest was bound to prayer, beyond mere winning and losing.

This site's view
In this site's view, was there a crowd? Playing before many means a strong wish for recognition; an empty stadium means striving for your own satisfaction. Rules changing mid-game hints at being swayed by others' standards.
Going deeper: our reading
A match lasting minutes rests on months of quiet practice; unglamorous laps and drills are often called the real foundation of competition. In this site's reading, a sports dream changes depending on whether you were practising or in the actual game. Repeating practice quietly suggests you sense your effort is truly building strength, even before results show. Being thrown into a real match and panicking may reflect anxiety about being judged before you are ready. This is our speculation, but dreaming of a sport you played as a child may show you seeking the team spirit or simple joy of movement from back then. Watching over a game as referee suggests you are straining to stay fair amid others' conflicts. On such a morning, a short walk or stretch can wake the body for real.
What to do on waking
Move a little today — a walk or light stretch turns the dream's drive into real energy.
