Psychology

A school-starting dream can reflect the hope and nerves of stepping into something new, often around a new job, hobby or relationship. Not finding your classroom, or feeling lost among strangers, suggests worry about being accepted.

Folklore and history

In Japan school begins in April, often under cherry blossoms, a familiar image of beginnings; a new school bag or uniform marks a family milestone. The dream is read as a lucky sign of a fresh start, and a sunny ceremony foretells smooth progress.

This site's view

In this site's view, age matters. Starting school as an adult among children means a wish to learn again, once given up because of age or status, is waking. Family by your side may show that someone truly backs your new challenge.

Going deeper: our reading

In the first days at a new school, everything is new: the layout of the buildings, teachers' and classmates' names, the timetable. Tired by how much there is to learn, we gradually make a strange place our own. In this site's reading, what you did first in the new place shows how you are facing change. Speaking first to the person beside you suggests a growing ability to engage with a new environment. Getting lost again and again in the building may mean you are still feeling your way through the rules of a new job or relationships. This is our speculation, but excitedly opening brand-new textbooks may show a pure wish to learn something from scratch awakening in you. Arriving at the ceremony alone in casual clothes points to strong anxiety about fitting into a new group.
