Psychology

Tenjin reflects focus on learning and evaluation, mixing hope and anxiety about whether effort will be recognised.

Folklore and history

Tenjin is the deified Sugawara no Michizane, a Heian scholar exiled to Dazaifu on false charges. Disasters in the capital after his death were blamed on his vengeful spirit; enshrined to calm it, he became the god of learning, linked to plums and oxen.

This site's view

In this site's view, it holds both injustice and reward. Michizane's shift from vengeful ghost to patron of learning turns unrecognised grief into help for others. A calm Tenjin means effort will bear fruit; thunder and dark skies reveal your own unacknowledged frustration.

Going deeper: our reading

Tenjin shrines often feature plum trees, which Michizane loved, and reclining ox statues. The legend of the flying plum, which flew overnight to Dazaifu out of longing for Michizane after he left the capital, and the custom of stroking an ox statue's head for wisdom remain dear to worshippers. In this site's reading, those who dream of Tenjin may be starting to notice the value not only of their efforts' results but of those who care for them and follow them. Walking shrine grounds fragrant with plum blossoms suggests your heart senses a hard season ending and a new one arriving. This is our speculation, but a plum tree flying to you from afar may hint that ties with people or places you left will unexpectedly return. Receive it with respect for a revered god of learning.
